INTERVIEW WITH STING ALUMNI MAGGIE SYMSMITH
What was your favorite memory or experience from playing for Sting?
My favorite memories from playing for Sting Soccer Club are all the travel trips to Phoenix for the ECNL Showcase.
How did playing for Sting prepare you for playing at the college level?
Playing for Sting helped me be a good person/teammate on and off the field. Every coach I had at Sting always encouraged us to be good teammates but more importantly better people in our day-to-day lives.
What was the biggest challenge you faced while playing for your youth club, and how did you overcome it?
The biggest challenge I faced while playing for Sting was getting burnt out. Getting burnt out is so common among sports now and there was a time I did not enjoy soccer and practice. I overcame this by remembering how much I love the feeling of letting everything go and just playing. I found comfort in my teammates and how we were all going through the same thing.
What did you learn about teamwork and leadership while playing for Sting?
I learned that teamwork comes from understanding your team more than just people on the field. The best teams have the best chemistry and trust those around them. Leadership means being a role model both on and off the field and inspiring your teammates to give their best performance. It involves taking responsibility for the team’s performance, communicating effectively with your teammates, and motivating them to work together towards a common goal.
Do you feel that playing for Sting helped you develop your skills as a soccer player? If so, how?
I definitely think playing for Sting helped me develop my skills as a soccer player. I was fortunate enough to play for Tatu for a couple of years and he gave me the confidence to get the ball in tight spaces. We worked a lot on possession and getting in the right places.
